Avoid an impulse trade

My biggest fear is an impulse trade. So I gave an AI agent my investment rules, and it checks every trade before I make it.

My biggest fear is an impulse trade

Bad news lands at 11:21. The price drops, I panic, and I sell at the low. By the afternoon the price is back, and I buy back higher. One morning of nerves, and the loss is real.

My agent read the same headline. It checked my rules, found nothing broken, and held.

I wrote my rules down

My investment plan is one plain file in a folder: investment-rules.md. Seven rules, in my own words. The agent reads that file before it says anything about a trade.

Rule 2 stops the most trades. I trade a holding only when it is more than 40% away from its target. Inside that band, the answer is hold.

Prompt it yourself

Help me write down my investment rules. Ask me one question at a time, then save them in investment-rules.md.

It watches the price and the news

Five holdings, each with its band. When a headline lands, the agent checks it against my rules. Most news changes nothing. It flags only the news that pushes a holding out of its band.

That is rule 5: read the news, never trade on it.

Prompt it yourself

Read today's news for my holdings. Does any of it change my plan?

It checks the tax first

Selling a winner costs tax. So the agent looks for a loser in the same portfolio and sells it too, and the loss offsets most of the gain.

It also skips a trade that changes only the tax bill and not the risk. That is rule 4.

Prompt it yourself

Can I sell a loser to offset this year's gains? Estimate the tax.

Let’s start prompting!

  • When it breaks: screenshot the error, paste it in, read what it says back

It tells me when to rebalance

Prices move, and the weights drift. When a holding leaves its band, the agent writes a rebalance: sell what grew too big, buy what fell behind.

A dry run first. Nothing is placed.

Prompt it yourself

Is any holding outside its band? Suggest a rebalance as a dry run.

I approve, it trades

The agent gives me an action plan with every rule checked. I read it and decide. Approve is my whole job.

Mine is connected to my broker, so I do not even open my trading terminal. You do not have to go that far.

Prompt it yourself

Write my action plan for this week. Check every order against my rules, and place nothing until I approve it.

Start with your next trade

Give your agent your rules and ask it to review your next trade. That is the whole first step. The other three prompts are above, one at each step.

Prompt it yourself

Here are my investment rules. Check my next trade against them before I place it.

Do it in the terminal

I do this with Claude Code, the AI agent in the terminal. It works in a folder on your own computer, so it reads your files every time and can look things up for you.

A web chat works too, but there you paste everything in again in every new chat.

  1. Get Claude Code

It comes with Claude Pro, US$20 a month, paid to Anthropic. Claude's plans

  2. Make a folder for it, and open it

    mkdir -p ~/projects/investing && cd ~/projects/investing
  3. Save investment-rules.md in it

Mine, as a start. Change it to yours.

    1. Never force the market. Limit orders only.
    2. Trade a holding only past 40% of its target, up or down.
    3. Sell first. Buy with settled cash.
    4. Skip a trade that only realises a gain.
    5. Read the news. Never trade on it.
    6. Dry run first. I approve every order.
    7. Use losses to offset gains.
  4. Start the agent

  5. Ask it
